Regal Theaters, the #2 domestic exhibitor, has announced plans to reopen all 564 North American locations (and more than 7,300 screens) by July 10. Cinemark, the distant #3 exhibitor, plans to open some of its 344 theaters this Friday, June 19 and all by July 10.

The major studios are partnering with members of the creative and exhibition communities to come up with ways to help the beleaguered movie theater business reopen. CAA has been helping to organize an executive committee of entertainment industry heavyweights to help supervise the effort. It is being overseen by Greg Foster, the former CEO of Imax Entertainment. Key leadership at all of the seven major studios and the largest theater chains have agreed to participate.

Inox theaters in India will launch private screenings. Customers can book a full screen to watch movies within a familiar setting. Director Siddharth Jain claims the tickets for the service will be “economically priced” and the facility will be available across 68 cities. “Footfalls are going to be tepid for sometime and customers will be fearful of sharing spaces with unknown people,” Jain said. For Inox, the concept is not novel; the firm’s Insignia offering has seen certain instances of patrons requesting for private screenings. “There will be exciting packages for people who want to book the full screen like F&B (food and beverage) offerings among others. India will love it as with reduced prospects of travelling, people will have limited options for recreation,” Jain said.

Beijing was just about to enter the U.S. equivalent of phase four of reopening amid the pandemic. But plans to reopen movie theaters, sporting events, and other indoor entertainment were swiftly canceled, as three new coronavirus cases appeared in the area this week. Theaters in Beijing won’t be opening just yet to get the summer movie season going in the capital, which makes up a significant number of China’s moviegoing public.
