 Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, along with producer David Lawson recently released a joint statement about their displeasure with the film “Synchronic” debuting at indoor theaters at this time. With the uncertainty surrounding the safety of indoor theaters (with social media reports from customers about lack of mask-wearing and social distancing at certain showings), the filmmakers behind the sci-fi thriller would prefer if you wait until you can view the film safely than risk it by going to a cinema. The statement concludes with this message: “We love and miss the theatrical experience, so let’s work together to stop the spread of the virus.

Being a champion of exhibition, and the first tentpole filmmaker to get movie theaters up and running with Tenet, it should come as no surprise to hear that the movie’s filmmaker Christopher Nolan and his wife, producer Emma Thomas, headed to the multiplex recently in Irvine CA, showing their full support for theaters. In fact, we hear they’ve been twice since the big circuits reopened during the pandemic, and it wasn’t self-serving to check-in or promote Tenet. Regal Cinemas tweeted out a photo yesterday on social media, writing, “Thanks for stopping by Regal Irvine Spectrum Christopher Nolan #TENET.” We hear that Nolan and Thomas were there to see Tri-Star’s Broken Hearts Gallery, and we understand last week they also watched Armando Iannucci’s Searchlight feature The Personal History of David Copperfield.

The U.K.’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) and the Treasury have revealed the rules for the country’s £500 million ($648.5 million) film and TV production restart program. The program is designed to help U.K. productions that have been suspended and are not able to secure insurance going forward, or are yet to start because of the lack of insurance but can begin principal photography before the end of the year. The go-live date for the program is not yet announced. The program is open to eligible productions that will incur at least 50% of the production budget on U.K. expenditure and pass the cultural test that qualifies them as “British.”
