“WandaVision,” coming this December ON DISNEY +proves the creative team went to great lengths to ensure the MCU series would feel like a classic 1950s sitcom.The pilot “went full midcentury sitcom, filming in classic black and white in front of a live studio audience. Crew members came to set in ’50s-era clothing and used period lenses and lighting to capture that dreamy vintage glow. The special-effects team employed wires and camera tricks straight from ‘Bewitched’ or ‘I Dream of Jeannie,’ making wine bottles appear to pour on their own and household appliances zoom about like magic. Four years ago, DOC NYC was the first major film festival after the election. It was an appropriate time for the country’s largest showcasing of non-fiction cinema, much of which speaks to some of the most pressing issues of our time. That’s true again this year, but the mood is likely to be quite different, and so is the experience as a whole. Like most of the festival circuit this year, DOC NYC is going virtual, which means that people across America can stream all 108 features and 92 shorts over the course of eight packed days. The lineup encompasses a wide range of subjects, from activism to police brutality and the role of creativity to parse an increasingly complex world. DOC NYC runs November 11-19.

David Fincher sums up the state of Hollywood in 2020 quite bluntly in a new interview with Total Film magazine, saying, “Unless you’re making a tentpole movie that has a Happy Meal component to it, no one’s interested. “There’s really only two seasons for movies. There’s ‘spandex summer’ and there’s ‘affliction winter.’ You’re making your movie for one of two seasons. And if you miss, you’ll fall into one of those other two seasons, which are nominally dumping grounds. Fincher’s latest project, “Mank,” is the farthest thing imaginable from a Happy Meal tentpole. The story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and the writing of “Citizen Kane,” “Mank” is a dense critique of the Hollywood studio system shot in black-and-white and created to look, sound, and feel like it was made in the 1930s.

Nothing is going to replicate the experience of seeing a movie in a movie theater.
