Studio Ghibli Fest is back. GKIDS has announced the dates of Studio Ghibli Fest 2021, which will return to theaters this fall with a celebratory 20th anniversary screening of Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning Spirited Away. It will be followed by three other Miyazaki films, all hitting theaters in both their English subtitled and English dubbed versions. While U.S. blockbusters deserted screens in 2020, French animated features had 10-year record-breaking performance at the local box office last year, according to a study conducted by the CNC (National Film Board) and unveiled on the opening day of Annecy Film Festival. As French theaters were shut down for most of the year due to the pandemic, only 25 animated films were released in local cinemas last year. But the few local animated pics that were released, such as “Bigfoot Family,” “Josep” and Joann Sfar’s “Little Vampire,” represented 32.7% of all admissions for animated films in France in 2020, the highest level within the last decade...

To celebrate Pride Month, Pixar has made its animated short film Out, previously streaming only on Disney+, available to watch online for free. Academy Award winner James Cameron is ready to share his filmmaking secrets. Cameron is the latest bold-faced name to join forces with MasterClass, offering a course during which he will give a behind-the-scenes look into his creative process and the principles and techniques he’s leaned on while crafting such films as Titanic, Avatar, The Terminator, Aliens and True Lies. The news comes as the 66-year-old filmmaker is prepping one of the most ambitious projects to ever come out of Hollywood with back-to-back follow-ups to $2.7 billion-grossing Avatar in Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. Per today’s announcement, Cameron’s MasterClass will feature scene breakdowns from Aliens, The Terminator, Titanic and Avatar along with detailed instructions on “how to identify stories that demand telling, build tension, create compelling characters — whether man, machine or alien — and harness technology to fully immerse audiences in imagined worlds.” He’ll also offer up insights from his career to lessons on leadership...

Hong Kong on Friday issued new amendments to its film classification rules, effectively injecting Beijing’s strict censorship standards on the previously liberal territory. Hong Kong censors previously screened content merely to rate it for typical metrics like violence or obscenity, classifying them into one of three categories to indicate age appropriateness. Now, they will have to actively intuit what will displease Beijing. and remain “vigilant” in flagging potential national security threats posed by cinematic works, the new guidelines state. Films whose content or whose very act of screening could be interpreted as “an incitement to secession, subversion or collusion with foreign countries, advocating terrorism, publishing or displaying seditious publication” should be banned from exhibition...
