When his new film, Nightmare Alley, opened nationwide over the Dec. 17-19 weekend to a forgettable $2.8 million from 2,145 theaters, the Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro didn’t flee and instead reverse-engineered the movie’s release, this time with a black-and-white version. On Jan. 28, Nightmare Alley will once again be showing nationwide, or in roughly 1,020 locations. Based on the 1947 film noir classic from 20th Century Fox, the well-reviewed film stars Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Willem Dafoe. To date, Nightmare Alley has grossed just north of $9.6 million domestically. Founded in February 2021, French startup Dark Matters is set to unveil Gaul’s first virtual production facility. Setting up camp 23 miles from Paris, the 180,000 square-foot studio will open its doors this coming April, offering the local industry five new soundstages equipped for both traditional production and the LED-backed virtual sets made famous by the ILM Stagecraft system used on “The Mandalorian.” Backed by €10 million ($11.3 million) in VC funding from Paris-based firms Anaxago and CapHorn, and benefiting from another $2.2 million in public support, the full-service facility will be split between four core departments, focusing on hardware and software innovation, virtual production and creative development. Applications are now open for Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions’ second annual mentorship lab, which provides opportunities for Bipoc creatives in TV and film. The development and production company founded by Waithe and Rishi Rajani is again presenting the Hillman Grad Mentorship Lab, an eight-month tuition-free program focused on helping marginalized storytellers connect, grow and accelerate their entertainment careers. In its second year, the lab will be spearheaded by program director Lacy Wright and program advisor Justin Riley, who will handle day-to-day operations under the direction of Hillman Grad CEO Waithe, president of TV and film Rajani and chief operating officer Ericka Pittman...

In its report on the top streaming titles for 2021 (via Deadline), Nielsen revealed that Netflix's "Squid Game" was, unsurprisingly, one of the most streamed series of the year. What was surprising, however, was that it came in second place with 16.4 billion minutes streamed behind "Lucifer" with 18.3 billion in the number one spot. The latter show, which was inspired by the DC Comics character of the same name, aired its first three seasons on Fox before being canceled by the network and then revived by Netflix for an extra three seasons. It seems a lot of viewers took the time to catch-up on the show last year prior to its sixth and final season's debut on September 10, 2021. Indeed, this calls attention to one of the core problems with Netflix's in-house metrics: Because the company only counted the viewership for the final 10-episode season of "Lucifer" and not the 83 episodes before it, the show failed to make its top 10 charts for its global programming in 2021. This also illustrates why it's so tricky to determine which series are really the most "popular," given that "Squid Game" only has nine episodes so far, as opposed to 93 for "Lucifer" and 75 for "The Great British Baking Show" on Netflix (which claimed third place on Nielsen's chart for the most streamed series in 2021).
