AMC Networks chief Josh Sapan told The Hollywood Reporter that Acorn TV has "among the lowest churn" among major services owing to its focus as well as viewers' "dedication and affinity" for its content.

Seth Rogen is baffled by Hollywood’s need to have people care about the Academy Awards: “I don’t get why movie people care so much if other people care what awards we give ourselves,” Rogen said. “To me, maybe people just don’t care. I don’t care who wins the automobile awards. No other industry expects everyone to care about what awards they shower upon themselves. Maybe people just don’t care. Maybe they did for a while and they stopped caring. And why should they?”...

The 11th annual First Look festival at the Museum of the Moving Image set to take place March 16–20 at the MoMI museum in Astoria, Queens, will open with the New York City premiere of Camera d’Or winner “Murina.” Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović was honored with the title at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for Best First Feature, and the film is executive produced by Martin Scorsese. First Look will host 38 works, with 18 features representing more than 30 countries. Additionally, the festival will screen “Reflection,” a new work by Valentyn Vasyanovych, who will be the subject of a MoMI retrospective March 25–27...

A collaborative effort between filmmakers and cinephiles, Missing Movies sets out to “empower filmmakers, distributors, archivists, and others to locate lost materials, clear rights, and advocate for policies and laws to make the full range of our cinema history available to all. “Every time you want to preserve a film, it takes tens of thousands of dollars to restore a movie and to digitize it, and then to make it available in whatever the latest technology is. If you don’t have that money, have those resources, or have those insider friends, what do you do? Where do you go? That’s where we want to help,” Savoca said, citing the goal of a “how to” guideline for filmmakers...

Industry sources confirm that the seven-screen the Landmark Theatre Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco will shut down Friday. Although no reason for the departure has been announced, sources suggest it was the landlord’s decision to not extend the lease after non-payment of rent. As recently as 2019, the Landmark theaters enjoyed a $67,000 opening weekend on “The Farewell.” It also played initial city runs of “Parasite,” “The Favourite,” and “Belfast.”....

After two years of lockdowns and disruptions, Canada’s production sector appears to be entering into a post-COVID boom. American streaming giants and broadcasters are not only returning to Canada for location shoots — they’re setting up shop for good with new builds of production stages, soundstages and studios. “The fact that Netflix is taking long-term leases and buying studio space, the fact that CBS did that as well, you’re seeing big international entities seeing value in investing in real estate to service their productions here and are committed to staying,” says Mark Bishop, co-CEO of Toronto-based indie producer marblemedia, creator of the reality glass-art competition series Blown Away on Netflix...
