TDirector, Robert Eggers, has revealed that he wants Willem Dafoe in the cast of his long-awaited Nosferatu remake. The two began a working relationship with The Lighthouse, which debuted in 2019. Their latest collaboration, The Northman, debuts in theaters on April 22. The original Nosferatu was directed by F.W. Murnau and debuted in cinemas in 1922. A loose adaptation of the iconic Dracula story, the film follows a vampire named Count Orlock (Max Schreck), who descends upon a town to bring terror to an unsuspecting real estate agent (Gustav von Wangenheim) and his wife (Greta Schröder). Nosferatu is considered a quintessential piece of German Expressionism and one of the original films that helped to form the DNA of the horror genre as fans know it today...

Halle Berry made a movie titled The Call, in which she played a 9-1-1 operator working a call from a kidnapped teenage girl (Abigail Breslin) while also dealing with demons from botched emergency call in her past. This past week, for reasons that are confusing to most people, The Call was the number one movie on Netflix’s viewing charts. And when Berry noticed this, she Tweeted the best reaction: so “The Call” is the No. 1 movie on @netflix right now, nearly 10 years after it’s release. Are y’all OK?...

Sundance Film Festival: London, the UK offshoot of Sundance, is to host its first industry programme, running concurrently with the festival at Picturehouse Central from June 9-12. Industry passholders will have exclusive access to talks, events, round-table meetings, keynote speeches, masterclasses, panel discussions and daily networking drinks. Passholders will also have access to three public screenings of their choice...

Angelika Film Center and Sony Pictures Classics want you to go back to the movies…with a friend. In an effort to increase foot traffic at arthouse cinemas, Angelika and SPC have partnered to launch “Bring a Friend Back to the Movies.” The initiative is timed to the release of “The Duke,” a dramatic heist comedy starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren, on April 22. “Bring a Friend Back to the Movies” will provide one complimentary ticket to customers who purchase a ticket directly from the Angelika website, app or in theaters to see “The Duke” during the first week of its release. Select Angelika locations will also offer each ticket holder for “The Duke” a specially priced split of bubbly to share with their friend in celebration of their return to the movies...

Staff at Ukraine’s top studio, Film.UA, didn’t think much of the abandoned bomb shelter on site. A vestige from past conflicts, the sealed shelter remained unused next to the company’s extensive wardrobe department for years. But at the outbreak of war, the space was hurriedly reopened to host at least 90 Ukrainians taking cover from Russian air raids...

“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski told Empire magazine that he shot approximately 800 hours of footage for the long-in-the-works Tom Cruise action sequel. The filmmaker put that number into perspective by saying the sequel “shot as much footage as the three ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies combined.” Kosinski reunited with his “Oblivion” star Cruise for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which takes place over 30 years after Tony Scott’s 1986 classic. “Out of a 12 or 14-hour day, you might get 30 seconds of good footage,” Kosinski said about why so much footage was shot. “But it was so hard-earned. It just took a very long time to get it all. Months and months of aerial shooting. We shot as much footage as the three ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies combined. I think it was 800 hours of footage.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is set to world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where Cruise will be in attendance. Paramount Pictures is opening the action movie in U.S. theaters on May 27....

The Cannes festival will open with “Z (Comme Z)” by Oscar-winner Michel Hazanavicius. The “zombie comedy” set in Chechnya will be an out-of-competition title. It will be joined in that classification by Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, which was previously announced by the fest. So was Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” which will also feature a salute to star Tom Cruise. Also, screening is Joel Coen’s first solo feature, “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a documentary. Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, was somewhat unexpectedly announced as an out-of-competition title. Olivier Assayas will also return to Cannes to screen his HBO series “Irma Vep” starring Alicia Vikander and Jerrod Carmichael. And Ukrainian film will be spotlighted with Maksim Nakonechnyi’s “Bachennya Metelyka (Butterfly vision)” in Un Certain Regard. Traditionally, the festival’s jury president and members are announced before the selection. That has not been the case this year. Festival director Thierry Frémaux says the delay is due to so much talent working on new projects...
