For 50 years, the nonprofit documentary production company DCTV has been at the forefront of producing socially conscious nonfiction cinema on a grassroots scale. That mission extended last week to the realization of a longstanding goal with the opening of the Firehouse Cinema, a single-screen theater exclusively dedicated to showing documentary films located at DCTV’s Lower Manhattan headquarters, in the same old firehouse that co-founders Jon Alpert and Keiko Tsuno have worked for decades. The theater presents a promising new rental space for documentary Oscar contenders in need of qualifying runs and tastemaker events, which the owners hope will supply a sufficient revenue stream to cover operating costs as well as the underlying goal: to inject a range of diverse voices into the documentary field, while cultivating an audience for that work...

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment releases “The Munsters” on digital platforms, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday. The film stars Sheri Moon Zombie, Zombie’s wife and enduring marquee lead, alongside Jeff Daniel Phillips and Daniel Roebuc. While Zombie remains fiercely loyal to the tone of the original ‘60s sitcom with his film, the director also recognized that it wouldn’t stand on its own legs if it primarily attempted to replicate its source material. The filmmaker found his shock of the new in what at first seemed to be a creative limitation: Universal would not give “The Munsters” a go if it was filmed in black-and-white, as the original ‘60s sitcom was. Though disappointed at first, the requirement led Zombie to consider what “the opposite of black-and-white” would look like, trailblazing a ludicrously colorful, hyper-saturated aesthetic for his monster mash. The resulting visuals are completely distinctive from the original series, while keeping with its core eccentricities...

Last year’s best picture trophy went to “CODA,” an Apple streaming release that brought in $1.6 million at the box office, and while the ceremony’s ratings increased from the year prior, it was still the second lowest overall.
