Ralph Fiennes, who played the iconic baddie in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, spoke out on the “verbal abuse” weathered by author Rowling amid her repeated anti-transgender comments. “J.K. Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings,” Fiennes told The New York Times. “It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally centered human being. The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling.” Fiennes continued, “I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, über-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”...

James Cameron is calling on the movie superheroes to grow up. The “Avatar: The Way of Water” director dissed Marvel and DC superheroes for being two-dimensional characters that lack any real-world motivations or deeper emotions. Aside from seemingly eternal youngin’ Spider-Man (minus the Sam Raimi trilogy), the Marvel heroes “act like they’re in college,” Cameron said. “When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have relationships, but they really don’t,” Cameron told The New York Times. “They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”...

Horror movies imbue the world we know with a malevolent power, bringing out the threat of violence we suspect is always lurking just below the surface. The home is a particularly potent setting for such a transformation, and while there are a lot of different methods for making a moviegoer question the safety of their supposed haven, one of the most dependable is a good old fashioned haunting. Looking at horror movies from across the decades, we can see patterns of production design, composition and lighting, special effects, and sonic choices that give haunted houses their ghostly and/or ghastly strength. Nearly 60 years after director Robert Wise put Shirley Jackson’s malevolent Hill House on screen for the first time, there’s still room to debate whether the mansion’s effect on its guests is psychological or supernatural. You can never be too sure about anything in “The Haunting,” and this is by design: From the camera angles and movements executed by Wise and cinematographer Davis Boulton to the way that the editing deliberately obscures the house’s layout, the film’s primary mode of fright is a kind of funhouse disorientation. It’s no wonder “The Haunting” was a major influence on Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion attraction....

The nominees for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards were revealed on Wednesday morning. Top Gun: Maverick and Hocus Pocus 2 were among the movie nominees, while Abbott Elementary and Euphoria scored in the TV categories. Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, the latter of which just released her 10th studio album Midnights on Oct. 21, were nominated in various categories such as the album of 2022. RuPaul’s Drag Race and Selling Sunset were among the reality TV nominees. The annual awards show will air simultaneously on NBC and E! on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, CA....

The Ukrainian National Film Critics association handed out its Kinokolo Awards Thursday night, broadcasting the ceremony from a bunker studio in Kyiv. The event was carried on national public TV channel Suspilne Kultura. Pamfir from director Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk was the night’s big winner, taking home best film, best director and best screenwriter honors, as well the discovery of the year prize for the best full-length debut. Pamfir star Oleksandr Yatsentyuk also took best actor for his performance in the film as a man who returns to Ukraine from abroad and gets drawn into his criminal past. Pamfir premiered in Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight. Despite the ongoing war and the technical challenge of hosting the ceremony from a bunker, the 2022 Kinokolo awards went off without a hitch....
