Ava DuVernay’s distribution vehicle Array Releasing has partnered with JetBlue to launch a pop-up in-flight channel that will screen a dozen Array features. “Over the years, I’ve experienced transformative moments by watching films while flying. Something about the intimacy of being in the air as stories unfold has always appealed to me,” DuVernay said in a statement. “We launched Array Releasing in 2011 as a way to connect audiences with indie cinema made by underrepresented filmmakers. Our hope is that JetBlue travelers will sit back and enjoy the magic of these films, exploring new visions and new voices while in the majesty of mid-air.”...

The “Glass Onion” strategy initially looked like a joke — the one about a camel being a horse designed by committee — but here’s what Netflix achieved. With a bargain marketing spend, (per iSpot, just over $4 million in TV ads) Netflix got over 1 million people to see the film while experiencing the comedy in well-attended shows to elevate the enjoyment. Assuming good worth of mouth, its absence from any viewing over the next three weeks becomes a feature rather than a bug. Netflix also satisfied the desires of Rian Johnson and his team for theatrical play and provided reviews (with a terrific 81 Metacritic score). It’s campaigning for awards, which aren’t out of the question. And as theaters have proven, big screens elevate streaming...

Eventually, there will be a concert cut of the musical biopic said director Baz Luhrmann. “It’s a directors’ assembly. It’s not a cut. There’s a whole lot of material that adds up to four hours, but I have gone on record now to say not today, not tomorrow, but at some point I would do [it],” Luhrmann said. “Because Austin did his concerts full out. He did all the numbers. Austin just did it and it was an out of body experience to watch him do those full concerts, so one day I will cut those full concerts together.” Luhrmann continued, “We just had all the cameras. [Cinematographer] Mandy Walker even got the lenses reproduced from the ’60s and ’70s and ’80s to match exactly everything.”. Butler said during the film’s press tour “So I would come on stage, like in Vegas, do the entire concert, curtain comes down, I walk off. So every time the audience is getting the experience of the show. And if we would cut for any reason, I would entertain the crowd as Elvis. It was the same thing as him having to make jokes to keep everyone entertained.”...

It’s been known for a while that the film's director James Cameron has been working on multiple sequels for quite some time. However, while he has ideas for Avatar 6 and 7 he understands there might be an issue with planning that far into the future. Cameron said if six and seven happen he’d be 89 by the time he got around to making them. If James Cameron's calculations are what actually happens, we’ll get Avatar 6 or 7 around 2043...

Russia was a significant presence at India’s recently concluded Film Bazaar market in Goa, with Roskino and Moscow Export Center occupying two pavilions. There were 14 Russian production companies represented at the Moscow Export Center pavilion. Roskino, operating under the umbrella brand ‘Russian Content Worldwide,’ featured more than 30 films, series and animations from 10 content producers. “The presence of Russian companies at such a significant event in the Asian content industry marks a new stage in the development of Russian-Asian relations in film and animation,” said Roskino CEO Inna Shalyto in her introduction in the organization’s Bazaar brochure. “We look forward to strengthening business dialog with the Indian film industry and representatives of other Asian countries and are pleased to present a selection of outstanding projects created by Russian filmmakers.”...

The National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has undertaken the massive task of restoring 5,000 priceless classics of Indian cinema. The initiative is already bearing fruit with Satyajit Ray’s “Pratidwandi” (“The Adversary”) being screened at Cannes Classics and “Shatranj Ke Khilari” (“The Chess Players”) at Venice Classics this year. As part of the process, all 5,000 films are being digitized and 2,200 of these are being restored. The NFAI set up the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) with the objectives of condition assessment of film reels to ascertain the remaining life of the film; 2K/4K picture and sound restoration of landmark films of Indian and recording of new picture and sound inter-negatives of each film; digitization of films; construction of archival and preservation facilities; training and workshops for in-house capacity building; and web-based end-to-end IT solutions...
