Apple Original Films debuts a new trailer for “Fingernails,” helmed by director Christos Nikou and featuring a star-studded cast including Academy Award-nominee Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), Academy Award-winner Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal"), Golden Globe Award-winner Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) and Luke Wilson (“The Goldfinch”). “Fingernails” will debut in Los Angeles and New York theaters on Friday, October 27, 2023, and will premiere globally on Apple TV+, as well as in additional select theaters, on Friday, November 3, 2023. “Fingernails” is the second feature and first English-language film from visionary director/writer/producer Nikou, whose directorial debut was the highly regarded Greek film, “Apples.”...

The Golden Globe Awards will introduce two new categories to its upcoming January broadcast, Variety has learned exclusively. The categories will honor hit movies with global reach in either box office or streaming views, as well as acknowledge the best performance in a stand-up comedy special. The first new prize is the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Eligible nominees will be among the year’s highest-earning or most-seen feature films that also deliver creative excellence. Titles must have grossed at least $150 million during release, $100 million of which must have come from domestic box office. Streaming films with commensurate viewership will be considered based on data from “recognized industry sources,” the Globes said. Eight films will be eligible for that prize, and can also compete for categories like Best Motion Picture Drama or Comedy as long as they meet criteria for those fields...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will bestow a replacement Oscar for supporting actress winner Hattie McDaniel to Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts during a ceremony titled “Hattie’s Come Home” in Washington D.C. on Oct. 1. In 1940, McDaniel made history as the first Black person to be nominated for and win a competitive Academy Award for her supporting performance as “Mammy” in “Gone with the Wind” (1939)...

Yeti has launched a $200,000 grant to support emerging documentary filmmakers. The global outdoor brand’s Pretty Wild fellowship will support four directors as they create short docs that give a fresh perspective on the beauty, grandeur, and vulnerability of the outdoors and the people and stories that live there. Fellows will be offered mentorship, $50,000 unrestricted grants, and guidance throughout the development of their films. The fellowship was developed in partnership with Little Monster Films, the production company founded by Academy Award-winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, and the Points North Institute, a nonprofit organization that supports the next generation of nonfiction storytellers. Vasarhelyi and Chin will serve as mentors for the inaugural crop of grant recipients...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer nudged near the $60 million mark in China during a somewhat downbeat weekend for moviegoing in the world’s second-largest theatrical territory. Oppenheimer opened in China nearly a month ago and its staying power has been considerable. Nolan has a strong following in China — a fact that Universal leveraged with a very well-received prerelease promotional visit to Beijing by the director in late August. Oppenheimer now sits near the middle of his filmography in terms of total box office earnings in the country: Interstellar ($139 million), Inception ($68 million), Tenet ($66 million), Oppenheimer ($58.1 million), Dark Knight Rises ($52.7 million) and Dunkirk ($51 million)...

The Ontario film and TV industry is working to reduce its carbon footprint and introduce sustainable practices as Hollywood studios and streamers have increasingly shot their originals in the Canadian province in recent years. The report, conducted by the Green Sparks Group, said an industry-wide push for sustainable film production as a default on soundstages and locations is required to keep Hollywood coming north after the dual Hollywood strikes are settled and after major studios and streamers have already worked to reduce their carbon footprint.
