Apple TV+ scored wins for acclaimed, hit Apple Originals, with “Slow Horses” making its Emmy debut and “The Morning Show” star Billy Crudup earning his second Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his magnetic performance in the celebrated series. “Slow Horses” creator and executive producer Will Smith was awarded Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the third season of the darkly humorous espionage thriller. The fourth season of “Slow Horses” is now streaming globally on Apple TV+, and the series has been renewed for a fifth season....

Sony and Warner Bros. are preparing for a heavyweight fight in Las Vegas, as both studios seek state funding to build rival production facilities. The companies are looking to expand their footprint outside of Los Angeles, and Las Vegas is only 75 minutes away by plane. As with nearly all location decisions, the key factor is whether the state is willing to offer a tax incentive. Nevada leaders want to diversify the Las Vegas economy, which relies overwhelmingly on tourism and gaming. But they have balked at the price tag to fund both projects. That has set up a competition between the studios over which would pack a greater punch. Warner Bros. is a bigger studio, and is proposing a bigger project with a higher volume of film and TV production. Sony’s studio would be smaller — and less costly to the state — but would be part of a larger commercial development, including retail and hotels...

Culinary Zinema, the San Sebastian Film Festival’s hugely popular food-themed sidebar, opens Sept. 23 with “Mugaritz. No Bread, No Dessert,” (“Mugaritz. Sin pan ni postre”) which draws back the curtains to reveal the inner workings of the two-Michelin Star Basque restaurant, Mugaritz. Using an AI-generated digital replica to replace the contributions of an actor or performer’s voice or likeness — whether that individual is living or dead — is now against the law in California. California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed a pair of bills that extend SAG-AFTRA’s recently won protections for AI into California law. The first bill, AB 1836, “prohibits the use of a deceased person’s voice or likeness in digital replicas without the prior consent of their estate,” according to SAG-AFTRA. The second, AB 2602, “prohibits contractual provisions that would allow for the use of a digital replica of an individual’s voice or likeness in place of the individual’s actual services,” unless the individual gave their consent to a clear, specific description of how the AI would be used...

Frank Oz‘s illustrious career will be celebrated by the Museum of the Moving Image with screening series ”The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective.” All 15 films Oz directed will screen, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” to ”The Muppets Take Manhattan” to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Bowfinger.” Oz’s acting roles in “The Empire Strikes Back” and ”Inside Out,” plus his character creations for ”Sesame Street” and ”The Muppet Show,” will also be part of the lineup.
