Apple Original Films announced the definitive new documentary on rock royalty Fleetwood Mac. The fully authorized documentary is directed by five-time Academy Award nominee and Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award winner Frank Marshall (“The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” “The Beach Boys,” “Rather”), and for the first time ever, Grammy Award-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Fleetwood Mac share their extraordinary story in their own words....

The 1995 Academy Award-nominated psychological thriller will usher in its pearl anniversary with a digital 4K Ultra HD and 4K UHD Blu-ray disc release on January 7, 2025, plus an IMAX worldwide theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada beginning four days earlier on January 3. “Se7en” was never released in IMAX; ’95 was before IMAX began to dabble in Hollywood films, and “Se7en” was never re-released for the format. Fincher’s other Pitt collaboration, “Fight Club,” was similarly released in a remastered 4K Ultra HD with a theatrical re-release set for a later date; “Fight Club” marked its 25th anniversary in 2024. In conjunction with the remaster, Insight Editions and New Regency also announced an exclusive 25th anniversary art book as a collector’s piece. Blumhouse partnered with Facebook-owner Meta last month to get three filmmakers to test out the tech giant’s new AI tool Meta Movie Gen, including Casey Affleck, and IndieWire used this opportunity at CWP’s Fall Benefit to ask him about it. “I think they’re cool,” Affleck said. “It’s an opportunity for people who wouldn’t ordinarily get their hands on the resources to do certain things that you can do with movies to create worlds that are far away or super imaginative, that would be very expensive,” he told IndieWire. “I think as soon as these tools become available to everybody, you’re going to see all these people that didn’t have access to the five studio heads and all of their big budgets, be able to make incredibly imaginative, world building movies, features, and shorts. It was a lot of fun.” The Meta technology is meant to use simple text prompts to produce videos and sounds, edit existing video or photos, and do so at 1080p HD video and audio quality. But per a blog post, the tech won’t be integrated into public products on Facebook until next year, and they first wanted filmmakers to test it and provide feedback as part of a pilot program...

The Latino Film Institute (LFI) has named its 10 directors for its annual LFI Inclusion Fellowship. The program includes a $50,000 grant, personalized mentorships, and networking opportunities and is supported by the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity. All of the fellows’ completed projects will be screened at the 2025 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) taking place from May 28 to June 1...

Thanksgiving 2018 holds the record for generating the most revenue in terms of overall ticket sales for the five-day holiday corridor, which runs from the Wednesday before the holiday through Sunday, according to Comscore. That year, led by Ralph Breaks the Internet ($84.7 million), Creed II ($56 million) and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($42.3 million), revenue reached $315.6 million over the five days, the only time it’s cracked $300 million, according to Comscore. This year, Walt Disney Animation’s music-infused adventure Moana 2 lands Wednesday, Nov. 27, and is tracking to open to a massive $125 million to $150 million for the five days Universal’s Wicked, based on the smash hit Broadway play, is likewise looking to sing and dance its way to eye-popping numbers. Like Gladiator II, it will debut Friday, Nov. 22, to get a jump on the holiday and provide some distance from the Moana sequel. Movies opening the weekend before Thanksgiving, rather than midweek on Wednesday, can often come close to repeating their opening number during the official five-day holiday weekend — if they click, that is — explaining why most are betting on overall revenue besting the 2018 Thanksgiving number. It might seem counterintuitive to open three tentpoles so closely together, but it’s proved again and again that for certain times of the year — whether summer or the year-end holidays — the marketplace can support multiple titles if they feed their target demos...

Critically, European films are having a hell of a year. Euro cinema is well represented in this season’s Oscar race, with the likes of Jacques Audiard’s transgender crime musical Emilia Pérez, Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave, Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire The Substance, Steve McQueen’s WW2 drama Blitz, Tim Fehlbaum’s historic thriller September 5, and Pablo Almodovar’s end-of-life drama The Room Next Door, are among the award frontrunners. Commercially, it’s another story. On Thursday, the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO), a research body, published its annual report on the theatrical performance of European movies worldwide. It’s not a pretty picture. According to EAO, European films accounted for just 6 percent of worldwide ticket sales in 2023, compared to 56 percent for U.S. productions and 26 percent for Chinese films. Japan, thanks to the global success of anime, is close on Europe’s heels, with Japanese releases accounting for 5 percent of theatrical admissions worldwide.
