Excerpt from: “Caption This: the subtitling champions working to make festivals, screenings and global cinema more accessible."While accepting the Golden Globe for Best International Feature Film in 2019, Parasite director Bong Joon-ho famously said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” A few weeks later, the director would go on to accept the Oscar for Best Picture, the first time in the history of the Academy that a non-English-language film took the ceremony’s main prize. Judith Shulevitz wrote in The New York Times in a 1992 article about audiences’ objection to text on screen. According to several studies, in many non-English-speaking countries, subtitles take second place to dubbing in usage, with huge markets like Spain, Japan, Germany and France often opting for the latter. Shulevitz concludes her article by stating that “as the world grows smaller and film productions grow increasingly international, subtitles may become less common.” Yet, the year that Parasite won Best Picture, Netflix published a study stating approximately 80 percent of its viewership consumed subtitled content, with the US viewing of non-English titles increasing by 33 percent in two years!

MKingdom of the Planet of the Apes actor Kevin Durand addresses whether Proximus Caesar could return in a future installment. Durand's villainous character is the latest antagonist in the long-running franchise. During Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' ending, Noa defeats Proximus Caesar with the help of the eagles, which culminates in the villain plunging to his death. Durand shares that he is still optimistic about Proximus Caesar potentially returning in a future sequel. He emphasizes that a body is never shown.Without a body being shown, there is an avenue for Proximus Caesar to return, especially for a franchise rooted in science fiction...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington's stage version of Othello has set an all-time Broadway record. While both actors are known primarily for the screen, Washington and Gyllenhaal have also made their foray onto the stage. Washington is a previous Tony Award recipient, winning Best Leading Actor in a Play in 2010 for his role in Fences, which he later adapted for the screen. Gyllenhaal has been in productions both on and off-Broadway, including Sunday in the Park with George and Little Shop of Horrors. The actors currently star together in Othello. Othello has now broken the record for the highest-grossing play in Broadway history. In its previews at the Barrymore Theater, the Shakespeare play managed to bring in $2,818,297. Steve Harvey – the Emmy-winning entertainer, author, and philanthropist known for series including “Judge Steve Harvey,” “Family Feud” and “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” – has signed on to use AI licensing and protection platform Vermillio to guard against deepfakes and other unauthorized use of his image. “In today’s digital age, keeping up with the scammers using my likeness across all of the platforms is an impossible task,” Harvey said. “My primary concern is to make sure my fans don’t fall victim to these schemes.
