Los Angeles won’t be left out of the party. As the Paris Theater in New York has been packed with attendees for Netflix‘s ongoing screening series dedicated to the films of Alfred Hitchcock, LA audiences will get the same treat. The “HITCH! The Original Cinema Influencer” summer screening series will also come to The Egyptian Theatre, IndieWire can announce exclusively. The series kicks off Monday, June 9 and is currently scheduled through Thursday, July 3, but more dates and films from Hitchcock’s oeuvre will be announced at a later date. Tickets for the first batch of showings are on sale now....

Concrete, like most material, is taken for granted. Just look at the quiet beauty of the gray stone slabs as captured in Victor Kossakovsky‘s visual art installation adjacent documentary “Architecton.” The film, which premiered at Berlinale 2024, centers on legendary architect and designer Michele De Lucchi as the history of concrete is explored. “Gunda” director Kossakovsky investigates the effects of concrete on the environment, especially since the material cannot be recycled. The feature spans a war torn Ukraine to the Middle East, where concrete ruins of various kinds still stand after years of destruction. “Architecton” is a reflection on man’s relationship with architecture and making meaning out of ruins, rocks, and yes, concrete. The feature includes the research and voices of more than 100 leading international architects; Kossakovsky details in the trailer that eight percent of all CO2 is emitted due to cement, with 36 percent of that coming from construction alone....

UK actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has outlined his ambitions for building a bolstered film infrastructure in Africa, telling an audience at SXSW London on June 4, “I want to build the African Odeon”. Elba noted the low number of cinemas across the continent, during a discussion on creativity as capital for change. “I would love to be able to tackle some of that, because I believe the cinema experience that we have all gone through should be experienced by a new generation, I don’t think it should all be on a phone. “How do I do that? Building a model of data that shows that actually people do want to watch films, that they will enjoy the experience of theatre. I’m not going to try and boil the ocean, but it’s going to happen one bit at a time. The data is one thing, building the strength of the economy around the creators is one thing, and the distribution of it. Yeah man, I want to build the African Odeon.”...

SXSW London’s opening night premiere hosted hundreds of the rapper’s fans at brutalist venue the Barbican Centre in central London, where men donning bleach-blond buzzcuts and white tank tops took photos before the screening. Twenty-five years after the release of Eminem’s iconic song “Stan”, about an obsessed fan who takes his admiration for the rapper too far, Leckart flips the music documentary format on its head with Stans.The film follows not just the musician’s artistic trajectory but that of his most loyal superfans, with the doc “offering an entertaining and vibrant look at the modern nature of fandom and how social media has irrevocably changed the relationship between artists and their audience.” Leckart said after the premiere during a Q&A: “I was raised on hip-hop in the ’80s and ’90s, and I grew up on MTV. So I witnessed [Eminem’s] rise’s first hand and I was a fan, but I think I just kept coming back to the song ‘Stan’ and really thinking about how unconventional it was and still is.” He continued: “I just saw an opportunity to make an unconventional doc … We’ve seen a glut of docs that are just so straightforward and standard. And so this is a beautiful opportunity to do something different.”...
