Social Issues Are In The Media! |
|||||
Social issues through media have always been important. From the very beginnings of film and movies, through the 20th Century until today, media of all types have been used to portray, educate, discuss, promote, and even propagandize about dozens of issues. Consider the wide range of social issues available for viewing, discussion and debate in the media: abortion, adoption, affirmative action, alcoholism, animal rights, assisted suicide, birth control/sex education, censorship, child abuse, civil rights, cloning, genetic engineering and gene patenting, creationism vs. evolution, criminal justice, capital punishment, domestic violence, drug abuse, control, and legalization, drugs and athletes, drunk driving, environmentalism, inter-racial relations, sex and dating; hate crimes, homosexuality, human rights, illegal immigration, religious terrorism, media portrayal of violence, eating disorders; population control, poverty, rape and incest, right to privacy, welfare reform, and youth issues.
The range of technology available for media coverage of social issues has also exploded just in the last twenty years. Film, the original visual media technology, is now too expensive, time-consuming, bulky and unwieldy. It is available only to the movie industry giants. The internet, online videos, blogs, computer games, cell phones, and texting are the new social issues media.
